Yeo Oh-hyun, Hyundai Capital’s playing coach (45), is a ‘living legend’ in Korean volleyball. In the 19 seasons since the launch of the V-League in 2005, the number of times on the court alone has reached 600. 600 games is a record that would take 20 years even if you play 30 games a year. Leaving aside the history of injury or surgery, the pro is a place where you can be weeded out at any time if your skills are not maintained. However, Yeo Oh-hyun is still an exception. He was shy, saying, “Thanks to my parents for giving me a healthy birth.”
Yeo Oh-hyun is showing off his rust-free skills in the 2022-2023 season. Receive efficiency is 53.26%, ranking first overall. 2nd place Oh Eun-ryeol (Korean Air, 43.90%), Jeon Kwang-in (Hyundai Capital, 41.90%), Oh Jae-seong (Woori Card, 41.56%), Boo Yong-chan (OK Financial Group, 40.21%) and other juniors in their 20s and 30s there is a big difference. Yeo Oh-hyun is also contributing to the team with sets (0.257 per set) and digs (1.014 per set). Choi Tae-woong, head coach of Hyundai Capital, said, “I always work hard to shed blood and sweat. I saw it,” he said.
Every moment Yeo Oh-hyun stands on the court is the history of the V-League. Records are still ongoing. He set the all-time record of 5000 defenses in the 2009-2010 season and 10,000 defenses in the 2015-2016 season, respectively, and these are also continuously being updated. Currently, the defense ranks first with 13,114 defenses. The second place record is held by Korean Air coach Choi Busik (8587). It is a record that will not be broken for some time.
The Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) said that when Yeo Oh-hyun retires, he will be eligible for a new record in the defense category, but retirement is a far cry from him. Coach Choi predicted, “(He will be able to do more as a player).” Yeo Oh-hyun said, “I have no intention of giving up unless I get sick and can’t run anymore. He has never thought of quitting,” he said. “Of course, I am not in my 30s anymore. I’m already in my mid to late 40’s. But if I’m helpful, I wonder if the director will appoint me as well. It’s not something I can say I want to do, but I want to do it until I can.”
