Van Dijk could face further sanctions for swearing at a referee.

“The Football Association could impose further sanctions on Van Dijk after he appeared to criticize the referee’s decision to send him off,” British outlet Goal.com reported on Monday (Aug. 28).

Liverpool defeated Newcastle 2-1 in the third round of the 2023/24 English Premier League (EPL) at St. James’ Park in Newcastle, England, on Aug. 28, thanks to a brace from Núñez. Down a man after Vandijk’s sending-off, Liverpool scored two second-half goals to move into fourth place.

With the Reds trailing 0-1 in the 28th minute, Van Dijk tripped Newcastle forward Alexander Isaac outside the penalty box. Bandyke and the Liverpool players thought it was a yellow card and seemed to shrug it off. 메이저사이트

But when referee John Brooks pulled out the card, it was red. Van Dijk was stunned and covered his mouth with his hand. He swore at referee John Brooks, calling the decision “fucking bullshit” and initially refused to leave the pitch. He also got into a heated exchange with stand-in referee Craig Forson.

Speaking after the game, Jürgen Klopp said, “I don’t think it was a red card. There was very little contact and he was on his way to the ball, but I can’t say what I did. I can’t change the decision and I don’t want to. There’s a reason I’m not a referee,” he criticized.

Commentators like Neville and Carragher also addressed the issue after the match. Neville said: “I think Van Dijk should have followed him all the way, not tackled him. He should have tried to follow him all the way, but he didn’t and he made a reckless challenge to stop Isaac. The kick to Isaac’s left leg was too cavalier for Vandyke and he should have pursued and not given up.”

Now there’s news of further discipline for Vandyke’s behavior. According to the media, Vandijk will receive a one-match suspension, but the FA could take further action against him for his behavior after the red card.

According to FA rules, players who engage in “inappropriate behavior,” such as foul language, can be subject to further discipline. The FA rulebook lists penalties for ‘confrontational’ behavior, and in the past, some players have received additional punishment on top of their initial punishment for their behavior towards the referee after receiving a red card.

Liverpool are unbeaten this season and sit in fourth place with seven points from three games. Klopp’s side will be without their captain when they take on Aston Villa on September 3 at 10pm ET.
